Questions to ask a college coach

When a coach calls or you visit, you are interviewing them too. Good questions show you are serious, and the answers tell you whether the school is right for you.

Your spot on the team

  • Where do I fit on your list at my position or events?
  • How many athletes are you recruiting at my position this year?
  • What role do you see for me as a freshman, and after that?
  • Who is graduating at my position?

Money and aid

  • Is athletic aid possible for me? If so, how much and for how long?
  • How does athletic aid combine with academic and need-based aid here?
  • What do families usually pay after all aid?
  • What happens to aid if I am injured?

Academics

  • Can athletes major in what I want to study?
  • How do practice and travel fit around classes and labs?
  • What academic support do athletes get?
  • Can you help with admissions, and what grades and scores do I need?

The team and the program

  • What does a normal week look like in season and out of season?
  • How would your current athletes describe the team?
  • Can I talk to some of them?
  • What do you look for in the athletes you recruit?

Next steps

  • What would you like to see from me next?
  • When do you expect to make decisions for my class?
  • Should I plan a visit, and when?

Write down the answers after every call. They make it much easier to compare schools later.

Questions coaches will ask you

Be ready to answer: why you are interested in their school, what you want to study, your grades and test scores, your best results, your upcoming schedule, and what other schools you are talking to.

REACH keeps every coach conversation in one place, with replies drafted from what each coach wrote, so you never lose track of who asked what.

Questions

Is it okay to ask a coach about scholarships?

Yes. Ask politely and directly once a coach shows interest. Ask what aid is possible and what your family would pay after all aid.

Should my parents ask questions too?

Parents can join calls and visits and ask about cost and support. Coaches want to hear most of the conversation from you.
