How athletic scholarships work

Most athletic scholarships are partial, not full rides, and many college athletes pay for school with a mix of athletic, academic and need-based aid. Here is how it works at each level.

Full and partial scholarships

A full scholarship covers tuition, fees, room and board. A partial scholarship covers part of that. In most sports, coaches have a pool of scholarship money and divide it across the roster, so a few athletes may get large awards and many get smaller ones or none.

What each level offers

  • NCAA Division I: full and partial athletic scholarships. Since 2025-26, schools in the House settlement follow roster limits instead of scholarship caps, so they can offer partial scholarships in every sport and, if they choose, more scholarships than before.
  • NCAA Division II: athletic scholarships, mostly partial.
  • NCAA Division III: no athletic scholarships. Many athletes receive academic and need-based aid.
  • NAIA: athletic scholarships, often combined with academic aid.
  • Junior college (NJCAA): Division I can offer full scholarships, Division II can cover tuition, fees and books, and Division III offers no athletic aid.

Athletic money is only part of the picture

What matters is what your family actually pays. A school with a small athletic scholarship and a big academic award can cost less than a school with a bigger athletic offer. Your grades and test scores can be worth as much as your results.

  • Academic scholarships reward your grades and scores.
  • Need-based aid comes from your FAFSA and, at some schools, the CSS Profile.
  • Division III and many other programs build packages from academic and need-based aid only.

Questions to ask about an offer

  • What does the athletic award cover, and for how many years?
  • What happens to it if I am injured or the coach leaves?
  • Can it be combined with academic and need-based aid?
  • What will my family pay each year after all aid?
  • Is there a roster spot for me, and what role do you see for me?

How REACH helps

REACH shows your family's cost after aid at every school, based on the income you enter, next to your athletic and academic fit. You can see which schools are realistic on every count before you write a coach.

Questions

Are most athletic scholarships full rides?

No. In most sports, coaches divide scholarship money across the roster, so most awards are partial.

Do Division III schools give athletic scholarships?

No. Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships, but many athletes receive academic and need-based aid.

Can I combine an athletic scholarship with academic aid?

Often yes, depending on the school and level. Ask each coach and financial aid office how awards combine and what your family will pay after all aid.
