How to make a recruiting video coaches will watch

Coaches watch a lot of film, and they decide fast. A short, clear video with your best plays first gets watched to the end. Here is what to include and what to skip.

The basics for every sport

  • Keep the highlight video to about 2 to 4 minutes.
  • Put your best clips first. Many coaches decide in the first 30 seconds.
  • Open with a title card: your name, class year, position or events, height and weight if they matter in your sport, high school, club team, GPA and contact information.
  • Make it obvious which player you are. Circle or spot yourself just before each play starts.
  • Skip the music, slow motion and long intros. Coaches want to see you play.
  • Have full game or match film ready too. Interested coaches often ask for it.
  • Post it on Hudl or as an unlisted YouTube video so one link works on any phone, and update it every season.

Football

Lead with the plays that show your position's key skills: speed, physicality, hands or coverage. Show a mix of game film, not just one opponent. Specialists should show full kicks, punts or snaps with the result visible. Put measurables like your 40, shuttle and vertical on the title card only if they were verified.

Volleyball

Coaches want to see your position's skills in real play, plus some clean skills footage. Film from behind the end line, high enough to see the whole court. Show several rallies in a row for passers and defenders, not only the final contact.

Lacrosse

Show your position's work in game situations: dodges and shots for attack, ground balls and transition for midfield, slides and caused turnovers for defense, saves and clears for goalies. Include some full possessions so coaches see your lacrosse sense, not only the finish.

Track and field and cross country

Your results matter most. Coaches look at your marks and times first, so keep your results page up to date. Video helps most in field events and hurdles, where coaches want to see technique: a few clean attempts from the side, with the mark shown.

Sending it to coaches

Put the link in every coach email, near the top. Say in one line what the coach will see, for example your top plays from this season. REACH adds your film or results link to every coach email it drafts for you.

Questions

About 2 to 4 minutes for a highlight video, with your best clips in the first 30 seconds. Keep full game film ready for coaches who ask.

Do track and cross country athletes need a video?

Results matter most in track and cross country. Video helps most in field events and hurdles, where coaches want to see technique.

Should I add music?

No. Many coaches watch with the sound off, and music adds nothing. Spend the time making your best plays easy to find.
